This is intentional. They want people to activate the street level, going in and out of buildings (yes, even in winter), which is great in my opinion.

At this point the new building is not a Google building, at least not yet. If it does become one, a bridge could become a consideration -- it may have been (an optional) part of the design, even if it's not shown on the renders.

There is a bridge between 51 Breithaupt (old brick) and 28 Breithaupt (glass sculpture). It's there because the lower floors of the west side of 51 are occupied by non-Google tenants, so the ground-level path is roundabout, but the top floor is Google. Also, weather.

Ok Phase 3 is fully, 100% intended for Google, even the ground level (as in, there will likely be no ground floor retail). A bridge between Phase 3 and 2/1 is not being considered at all. They want employees to move between buildings by using the street. This comes from people in the design team and from Google.

Frankly, that’s silly. If somebody needs to get from their office to a meeting in the other building, they just want to get there, and forcing them to put on their coat and trudge through slush just so they can “activate the street level” is absurd, and won’t work in any case.

What’s so magic about the elevation at which the cars travel, anyway?

The weird thing is that we get this sort of thing from planners from here, not just California imports.

The elevation at which cars travel is also the elevation at which people walk through cities. This is not a suburban office park.

Well that's no fun.

Um, that is true only because there are no bridges! I see some circular reasoning not very far away from where we’re standing…

Where is this coming from? The proposal shows ground floor retail.

Yes, something like 9,000 or 10,000sq ft of retail space.

And plan approval may be based on the presence of retail space ...

Who's to say that it won't be a Google Store of sorts? Perhaps selling only Google "Branded" stuff or not, but you do have a lot of electronics that are made by or for Google.

True to all of the above, but what i'm saying is that the current intention is ground floor office space... as in, Google needs as much office space as it can get. This could change of course or could be a condition of approval, to have ground floor retail, however, some ground floor retail units sometimes are used as office space.
I keep getting physical mail on updates on this development from the city. How do I unsubscribe so they don't send me anymore mail?

You know, I often wonder if sometimes they come up with proposals they know the neighbours won't like in order to 'scale back' later on to appease people, and in the end, the developer gets what it wanted all along. Huh
