Is it by the Glen Eden/Lake Kelso area? that happens in cars too, windows open or closed
Totally, there is actually a big altitude change between KW and Toronto! Whenever I drive to the city it takes me an hour or so to start hearing again properly. Smile
Elevation change from Kitchener (1100ft/337m) to Toronto (300ft/92m) is 800ft/245m down according to Wolfram Alpha. Moreso if Union's closer to the lake and the train station's on a hill, I guess.
It's easy to notice the difference the 245m elevation change causes in fuel consumption between the Kitchener-Toronto and Toronto-Kitchener drives! I see close to 1.0 L/100 km difference between the two, in spite of similar speed and traffic conditions.
I as well!  Easy to show up in Toronto with a 3.0 L/100 km average, but coming home I'll always be up in the mid 4-s. :: shudder ::

(Yes, I'm gloating Wink  I'm a hypermiler, after all!)

The wind is usually heading Toronto-bound, too, which helps immensely.  I'm always looking at flagpoles...
Riding a bike to Toronto and back really makes the elevation change felt, especially if one rides up Bell School line or Appleby to climb the escarpment.
Ahhahaha, oh boy, yeah - Appleby Line is a fun one. Have you done the hill on Watson Road at all clasher? I think it might be steeper than the one at Rattlesnake Point, but obviously a lot shorter.
Why would you take Appleby (apart from the fun) when you have to go up the escarpment proper after descending from the outlier?
I've been up Watson three times this year, it's pretty intense. I only have a basic garmin but I wonder what the grade difference is.

The fun of it and the challenge is enough reason for me. Nice views at the tops of big hills too. The easiest way is to ride Derry road to Millburgh line I think.
plotaroute.com gives 22% as the maximum grade on Watson, which is a bit more than they give for Appleby Line (18% I think). I've been looking for a route that incorporates the Watson hill, but haven't really found anything that appeals to me yet.
I did a nice ride this spring out to it but any decent route usually ends up over a 100km. Last time I went up it I was on a 200. The way I like to go is something like this: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16223178

This derail should prolly get move over to the cycling thread Smile

The whole way. It's kind of like driving along the highway with windows open.
If it hasn't already been reported, 2 GO trains now sleep at Shirley Ave layover (or did last night)
Via a post at UrbanToronto (mushing words together is still cool, right?), these Metrolinx slides contain some information of local relevance on pp5–9, showing at least some internal Metrolinx activity associated with the Premier's somewhat vague announcement in June.
