I have asked the drivers about this, because they are supposed to deduct 2 fares and the card would carry 2 transfers, but you have to ask well before tapping, and even then they often don't remember how to do it and give you fares 2+ for free.
One of the hardware buttons should just assigned (via the screen) to do a + Fare (it normally shows a big “1 Fare” text with a single person icon. If you push the + Fare button, then the icon changes to showing two people, and the text changes to “2 Fares” etc. Then you tap.

That way it’s dead simple.
12. Can I pay for another person travelling with me?
You can pay for another person or group of people if you are boarding the bus and have stored value on your card. When you board, let the operator know how many people you are paying for. They will enter the number on the farebox, and the farebox will display the total fare. Touch your card to the smart card target to pay the fare.

Please note: All of the transfers for your group will be loaded on your card. If your group splits up at a transfer point, the other members will not have transfers. The group payment option is intended for customers travelling together to their final destination.

The group payment option is not available on ION light rail.
Too bad, the way I suggested would have worked better and been faster. I get why it won’t work for ion at the station entry point stanchion, but there’s no reason the reader and screen at the FareCard machine couldn’t accommodate deducting multiple fares from the card.

This will ultimately result in congestion at the FareCard machines because guests will all need to buy individual single use tickets.
(I see this all the time in other cities with big headways between trains - the panic around Fare machines when a train is arriving is about the most anxiety-inducing event aside from someone falling onto the tracks you can witness!).

This may be a dumb question, but couldn't someone pay with their card and then just give their card to the other person?

Probably not because when the second rider tries to taps it won't deduct another fare it will probably say "fare already paid" or "transfer".
A fare inspector needs to be able to see all the paid fares. If multiple people want to have their fares on one card, you can't simply tap it multiple times; it has to be set specially.
I tried last month to pay for two fares on the same card and the driver had no idea how to do it. He told me to ask at the Charles St Terminal and no one at the GRT office there had heard of this option either - even though it was part of the May GRT email newsletter and appears on the GRT website. The driver did tell me that they didn't get any training on the new EasyGo card, which seems odd.

I emailed GRT and gave them this feedback via the monthly beta survey but no one ever got back to me.

It’s easy, it would have shown two taps or two fares. The same “two people” icon could show up on their reader, it’s very simple.

I didn't mean the fare inspector's reader, I meant the initial setting of the fares.
So have a button on the screen that the rider pushes +1 Fare and then 2 fares get deducted. It’s super simple

That's genius level simple!  Must be why they never thought of it...  Sad

Genius level expression. Captures a lot of truth in very few words.

And yes, having a button to indicate one wants to charge more fares is a great idea.
