Stephen's Jewellers in Frederick Mall is closing. The couple that has run it (parents of a former coworker of mine) are retiring.

There's a new halal supermarket opening up at the former shoppers drug Mart at hazel and Albert.
According to Cushman & Wakefield's leasing PDF, Structube will be opening a new store in Waterloo at the Kingspoint Centre in the empty pet store unit beside Bouclair, across from Homesense.
There are plans in motion to expand the shopping centre at Lackner and Ottawa St.

Building permits:
Work Type Shell - Only - Retail/Wholesale Store
Permit Description Permit is for shell only construction of a new one storey building attached to an existing plaza by a firewall and includes underground plumbing and façade alterations to existing building. See permit

I'm curious what their numbers would be without Apple. Apple is the leader in $/sqft in retail. An article from 2017 put it at $5500/sqft in US dollars.

Thanks! Was wondering what that was going to be. Looks like renovations finished up with the front entrance, imagine it may open in the near future.
Starbucks set to pour into old public utilities building in downtown Kitchener

About $400,000 worth of interior renovations is about to begin on the privately-owned heritage building, according to a permit application submitted by Les Carney of Starbucks Coffee Canada to the city Feb. 7.

Storefront at Kitchener City Hall won’t be leased until 2021

The retail space at 220 King St. W., on the western edge of Carl Zehr Square, has been empty since the end of February when the arts shop Open Sesame closed after a three-year stint in the space.

Open Sesame's owner Lauren Weinberg said the lack of foot traffic made the 1,150-square-foot location challenging. The space has been a tough sell over the years, housing a computer store, clothing store and bookstore.

The square will be under construction in 2020 and 2021, and access to the shop could be limited at times, so city officials decided not to lease it to a new tenant. Instead, the city will use the space for city programming that could include temporary art installations, a pop-up retail shop or community programs.

I was really hoping for  craft brewery with restaurant for this beautiful building.  Another Star Buck ???  No thanks....
It will be interesting to see what you get for $400,000 of interior renovations.

I always thought a microbrewery would be cool here too.  Have a brewhouse and call it the Pub (Public Utilities Building).  Seemed too easy.

I was surprised by that number too.  I would think $400k gets you a lot more than the typical Starbucks furnishings.  I wonder if there is a lot of retrofitting that needs to be done.
They say it's going to be their largest in the area, so I imagine there's going to be a bit of a 'flagship' feel to it.
