Smile

No guarantee that they were NOT frozen (it's a $11 main course, after all), but at least that was not apparent. Apparently the cabbage roll gravy used to be tomato-based but now it's mushroom ...

On a different 'nightlife' tack, has anyone heard a solid date on the Fairway Cineplex opening? The structure looks essentially complete but obviously there's still some exterior work to be done.

It looks like it should be done fairly soon, but I read that the theatre isn't supposed to open until late 2016. I just Googled Cineplex Kitchener and 6th down on the search results list is a link to a PDF

A place to get a decent coffee near Columbia and Phillip would be great!

So the Record reports that Region public health officials laid 24 charges at restaurants last year, served 11 closure orders, and seized food unfit for consumption 99 times.  Wonder which restaurants?  Well good luck with that because none of them are named in the article.  A link is provided to the Region's on-line disclosure site, but unless you are willing to work your way through a VERY long list of operations, you are unlikely to be any better informed.  How difficult would it be for the Region to have a website that would allow searches by type of infraction?

Feeling surly this morning, I am tempted to ask how many of the affected restaurants advertise in the Record?

I know one of the closed restaurants was formerly known as China Fried Rice at 265 King St E in Kitchener. We used to go there and then found a "closed by public health" sign on the door. Oops.

Did you cllick on the enforcement tab? It filters down the list to premises with tickets or closures:
checkit.regionofwaterloo.ca/Home/Enforcement

And on the search page there is a little filter icon to the left of the search box that let you filter by different criteria including infraction type.

They also publish quarterly reports to council with the list of facilities and their infractions:

Thanks.  Not the most user friendly, but you can get there once you know what to look for.

Pure, twice, wow. One of my favourite spots to grab a healthy meal. Wonder what it was for in each case.

RE: General Food, Dining and Nightlife News - clasher - 05-04-2016

I checked on Pure's infractions and it seems they can't really get their heads around the concept of keeping cold food cold and hot food hot. They've got infractions going back to 2014. I've never been there (and I don't think I will) but it's not exactly difficult to keep juice in the fridge or soup in a crock pot. They've also had handwashing violations too... yummy.

I wonder if it's a health code violation to eat cold pizza

Eat? No.
Sell? I expect yes, if it's in the Danger Zone:

RE: General Food, Dining and Nightlife News - panamaniac - 05-04-2016

It's not exactly "food and drink", but this Record article about the comeback of hops farming and its link to the growth in craft brewing in this area was interesting, I thought. I drove up to Elora the other week and passed a small plot that had been set up with framing that I thought must be for hops.
