Anyone know why these fences were installed on the IHT between Union and Glasgow? They look cheap and are an eyesore as a result. Really change the vibe of the trail IMO.

Looks like a temporary measure to protect the vegetation. Don't know why they're necessary, though.

RE: Trails - timio - 08-28-2019

Aren't they redoing the utilities along the trail? Would make sense in that case.

That's what I was thinking, but it is mostly scrub brush and weeds along that section with some larger trees.

This is a section where I think they are installing lights, so that could be the case. But the fencing extends all the way around the vegetation into Gildner Green adjacent to the park. That wouldn't be needed if they were just burying utilities along the trail?

I think they are replacing a water main.

RE: Trails - megabytephreak - 08-28-2019

I think it is actually a new main from the William Street pumping station in Waterloo to the Strange Street station in Kitchener. I think route is supposed to be something like Herbert St. to John St to IHT. Not sure about the bit after IHT, maybe Cherry St?.
The Herbert St. portion started a few weeks ago.
If I recall from previous discussions, the William St. will no longer be doing treatment, only providing wells. The well water is then sent to Strange St. for treatment before use.
It has come up in some of the public works agendas over the last couple years.

RE: Trails - jwilliamson - 08-28-2019

The fencing extends all the to John

That makes total sense then, thanks for digging up the article to explain! John to Glasgow is the exact portion of the trail with the fencing, so things line up.

The ped island is in on Union, and wouldn't you know, they managed to fuck it up:

Serious question here, are our transportation engineers trolling the community?

RE: Trails - KevinL - 08-29-2019

Hopefully something more solid than those traffic cones goes in on each end...

RE: Trails - creative - 08-29-2019

Is it complete? WRC

It's not necessarily complete, but I don't expect someone to come along and tear it up and put in barrier curbs...

Honestly, this is testing Hanlon's razor to it's limits.

Idiotic. They could have saved a bunch of money and had the same effect by just painting it white.

Ideally, pedestrian islands would be protected by concrete bollards designed to stop a concrete truck running at highway speed.

That’s probably unrealistic, but it’s what we should be aiming for.

Indeed, especially on the painting, I honestly don't know what they are thinking here...

I feel like I'm being trolled....they've gotten refuge islands right(er) before...
