RE: 357 King St East - Memph - 10-30-2016

Still, it seems surprising that it's worthwhile to demolish a building only to build a new one that's the same size.

Was that the location of the old Checkerboard restaurant? If so I could swear I remember that checkered front into the mid or late 80s?

My recollection is that it was already Metro Karges Appliances in the later 1970s, but then my memory isn't anything to write home about!

Is the Checkerboard not still alive and kicking and exactly where it's always been?

Thanks!  I guess this explains the red-and-white chequered paint:
Quote:Before that the building was the home for Daly's Grocery. Leo Daly opened the store in 1935 as a Red and White, a chain backed by National Grocers.

RE: 357 King St East - Canard - 01-15-2017

Holy crap. I haven't been by here in a couple of months; I used to bike by it almost every day in the summer. I had no idea that whole building had been demolished! I'll have to detour out this way tomorrow on my way to work and have a look.

When's this one scheduled to wrap up?

RE: 357 King St East - kitborn - 01-16-2017

Is this the site at King and Cedar where they kept the basement of the original building?

RE: 357 King St East - jamincan - 02-08-2017

This is at King and Cedar right across from Nova Era bakery. I shudder at what living near that place would do to my waist line.

Update from today:

I was expecting something much larger for that spot.  Totally underwhelmed.

The building permit was for a footprint identical to the original building, so this should not be a surprise.

Indeed ... Portugese pastries are excellent!

I just assumed/hoped that this was going to be a temporary sales office/presentation suite for the developments happening in the adjacent property? Is this a possibility?

I think in that scenario they would have used the existing building rather than reconstructing it. But of course I am only guessing ...

Doesn't look like a very permanent building, does it?
