The town of Innisfil decided a few months ago to subsidize Uber rather than implementing a traditional transit service:

Now, it's a small town, and it's early days yet. Ridership seems not high for now:

There is a local ride-share service (RideCo) that did this with the town of Milton in conjunction with Metrolinx.

I think the most telling comment is that one of the groups that they hoped to attract (eg seniors) were unable to interact with Uber due to the lack of the proper tools (eg smartphones). That's going to be a hurdle.
It's also interesting that the town also partnered with the local taxi agency since the Uber drivers did not have accessible cars.
