RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - Spokes - 10-26-2018 That's weird. Really weird. Is there still a church operating out of there still? No, Private owners of the building https://www.therecord.com/news-story/7046272-former-zion-united-church-in-kitchener-won-t-be-demolished-owner-says/ RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - panamaniac - 10-26-2018 As long as the former Sanctuary remains intact, I have trouble imagining it being used for anything other than a music venue or nightclub. It's a very big space. RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - Spokes - 10-26-2018 Id be ok with a music venue. I feel like we need more of that. When I see some of the acts playing at CITS, it makes me want another music venue. Nothing against CITS, it just doesn't always fit some of the acts they bring in. I've heard some recent grads make this comment too. Could be something to help us retain talent. RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - GtwoK - 10-26-2018 It's being used for various events as of recent. There's a haunted hour (or something) happening there tonight, IIRC. Part of Plugin (Vidyard's initiative) RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - robdrimmie - 10-26-2018 PluginKW held a one-time Hallowe'en event last year in the funeral home that soon will be Sixo. The fact that they're holding this year's in the church is no indication of its long-term plans. It's the sort of event (somewhat like Startups and Beers) that takes advantage of unused space, and it's a decent way to raise awareness of the fact that the space is empty to the owner's preferred market of tech companies etc. Churches make great music halls. I'd love to have a 750-person hall downtown with some character but given the part of the article Rainrider22 linked that says the owner doesn't feel a bar or nightclub is appropriate, it seems unlikely. RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - neonjoe - 10-26-2018 That church should be turned into a Brewery. I've been to a few Church Brewery conversions and the spaces are often excellent. IE Brimstone, or Silversmith in the Niagara Region, or one of my favourites St Joseph's in Indianapolis. Disused churches are being turned into homes, restaurants, hotels, bars, night clubs, stores, mosques and more. If the buildings aren't being used, reuse should be a viable option, just as with old industrial or office buildings, before we resort to demolition and new construction. RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - goggolor - 10-26-2018 Or the Jopenkerk in Haarlem: https://www.google.com/maps/@52.3812011,4.6298393,3a,75y,225.4h,105.96t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sAF1QipOZLP1KwnQ2QrHhMljtGmmU4ZxVtS0tHdAVmWSx!2e10!3e12!7i13312!8i6656 RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - Spokes - 10-26-2018 (10-26-2018, 02:56 PM)neonjoe Wrote: That church should be turned into a Brewery. There's one in Pittsburgh who's name is now escaping me. But it's amazing RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - rangersfan - 10-26-2018 (10-26-2018, 10:47 AM)Lens Wrote: Apparently the Zion Church is going to be used as a night club for Halloween: https://churchentertainmentcomplex.com/ Honestly I think this is an amazing idea! That wouldn't be impossible, but it would be a heck of a big brewery. Have you been inside the former sanctuary? RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - GtwoK - 10-26-2018 I've not seen the inside, but given the size everyone seems to be claiming it to be, I wonder if something like the Foodhallen in Amsterdam might work here. See: https://goo.gl/maps/q9G4gJHjVjv Basically just a gigantic adult food court with multiple beer vendors and a bunch of one-off restaurant stalls (ie, not chains) with central communal seating. Maybe some small boutique shops in some outer areas. Mind you, I have no idea what this place looks like. I think with the right organist, an organ could be an awesome feature of a nightclub. Add a laser show to go with the music and you could have a whole new art form.
