RE: General Arts and Culture News - JoeKW - 06-11-2018

Ever After was ridiculously loud in previous years, that's why there were extra restrictions placed on them. I could hear it in clear on the other side of town (Fischer Hallman & Westmount).

Apparently, they used a much more sophisticated sound system this year that greatly reduced leakage to surrounding areas. Great news!

Six noise complaints, compared to 130 last year.

Was the technology they used basically a giant set of Bose noise-cancelling headphones, or like what the Porter Q400 planes do? Where it blasts out an anti-sound-wave at the same time and they cancel out?

I've been told the system was by PK Sound and googling came up with this-> http://trc.daily-beat.com/spotlight-left/2017/09/how-pk-sound-heightened-the-audio-landscape-of-canadas-festival-season/

Quote:Jeremy explains that while at Ottawa’s Escapade Music Festival, his team encountered a noise sensitive area right downtown in Lansdowne Park. “That area is kind of surrounded by residential neighborhoods, so there was quite a bit of concern from the community about noise bleeding. We were able to use the technology of Trinity to focus the sound away from residential areas. We actually had the by-law officer with us as well as the city councilor and we showed them the technology, and they were super impressed. It went a long way in making them feel comfortable with having the show there, especially in such very close proximity to a highly populated area. We did Veld in Toronto, Chasing Summer in Calgary – and again that was another sensitive noise area – and we were able to use the Trinity technology there to try and minimize the impact to the community.”

Stupid(?) question:

Are these sound systems temporary and just rented by Ever After organizers, or are they a permanent fixture of "On The Grand" so that all shows keep the neighbours happy?

Coke

A bit more detail on pages 7-8 of this pdf: https://www.pksound.ca/hubfs/Downloads/3D-Wavefront-Control-v1.3-1.pdf

Basically these speakers allow more precise control over the directivity of the sound which, when properly set up, can significantly reduce spill-over noise. No active noise cancellation.

A (mercifully) rare case of Kitchener and Waterloo working at cross purposes?

Here's a great segment from The National about the sound system at Everafter.

Coke

Not a stupid question at all. The sound systems are indeed temporary. After the stage is built, they 'hang' the set which covers mid/high range frequencies  (approximately 500-1000 hertz & up) and have 'bins' (subwoofers) on the ground either beside or under the stage to carry the low rang frequencies.
