ION - Waterloo Region's Light Rail Transit
The old render was just LRT scope. How the bus connections would be attached came later.

This is new, didn't know they were going to do this : http://www.rapidtransit.regionofwaterloo...0_Fair.pdf

This seems like an odd choice to me, but it looks like Cadillac Fairview is planning an expansion "The Mall owner has
indicated in recent years that it has alternate plans for the lands currently occupied by
GRT at the Mall and requires the removal of the GRT bus passenger facility from its
lands. "

Either that or they're just trying to force the terminal to move. Either way, moving the terminal closer to Fairway road and Wilson will make connections to the mall and to the surrounding neighourhood slightly worse. If they do invest in a quality facility then it'll be worth the extra inconvenience of walking further.

For the sake of my sanity I really, really need them to re-do the rendering for the Fairway stop. That original one is so horrific I can't even. Like how could anyone look at that and go "Yes! Approve." :: rubber stamps it ::

It's *awful*.

I definitely wont miss the flareups that blanket the area with greasy smoke spweing out of Burger king, but will miss crabby joes.

To attempt to answer the much earlier question about whether the g:link project was done on time and on budget I found this report that says it was on time:
http://www.acaa.net.au/wp-content/upload...t-Rail.pdf
"The project was ultimately delivered on time in mid-2014, with the success of the system demonstrated at its opening on Sunday 20 July 2014, which approximately 80,000 commuters attended."

I did not find anything about whether the budget was met, but I also did not find anything saying it went over or needed additional funds or a bailout.

As for the testing and certification phase the timelines seem to match what others have said before, 8-10 months:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G:link
“Testing commenced on the northern section of the line in October 2013. The line opened on 20 July 2014, with a free travel day, before normal operations began on 21 July.”

I noticed in the finance agenda that the 2015 year end report is on the agenda. The 2014 report had a full appendix of rapid transit project expenditures to date, the 2015 report does not even mention the project.

2014:
http://www.regionofwaterloo.ca/en/region...df#page=41

2015:
http://www.regionofwaterloo.ca/en/region...df#page=17

I also found it odd that there has been no update to council on contruction progress to date or the construction to come this season as was done last spring; guess grandlinq is too busy doing the actual work.
Everyone move to the back of the bus and we all get home faster.

I presume by that you understand then what I'm talking about.

No, I don't know what an SSP is; should I? Scottish Socialist Party? Survival Single Player? Secure Simple Paring? Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis? Solid State Physics? I guess Sterling State Park might have a Canada section, since it's on the border — are they getting an LRT to Detroit?

Ah, some things never change. Tongue

IIRC, prior to the renovations to Fairview Park Mall a few years ago, Cadillac Fairview had also expressed interest in expanding The Bay over the existing terminal.

Regarding the new terminal however, I hate the design. It makes for awful transfers in comparison to a traditional 'island' platform. I'm most annoyed over their plan to add 4-5 additional bays adjacent to the 'north' platform as seen in the original render of the LRT platforms. I think a more appropriate spot would be adjacent the to 'south' platform, directly across from Leon's. There is more than enough room for 4-5 bays their while cutting down on some of the meandering patrons would have to do between platforms. An additional crosswalk around this spot would be appreciated as well.

I'm at Bombardier's Millhaven test facility. The OCS system on the MOVIA test track is complete, but no train movements or sightings today. I didn't actually expect to see one of our trains here yet, but a little part of me had hoped that I might. Smile

They also mentioned some numbers about how much it is being spent per month, but I forgot exactly how much.

I would be concerned about that. Construction of the system should be done by end of year 2016. If construction guys are saying they will be done April 2017, it means that we will be four months behind schedule, and unable to do any testing of winter conditions, unless we delay opening until ~March/April 2018. Which would be bad.

Hmmm I'll let you know as soon as I hear more clarification.

The new Fairview stations seems like a bit of "sucking and blowing" on the Region's part. I would assume that Cadillac Fairview was opposed to anything the Region was proposing, including utilizing a portion of their (empty) parking lot on the western portion of their property for park'n'ride parking, but for the Region to expropriating two properties to build surface parking at a major intersection seems entirely against the entire reurbanization effort brought about by this very LRT.

This station is creeping more towards Fairview/Wilson than it is Fairview Mall, the true trip generator.
