ION - Waterloo Region's Light Rail Transit
The black lightposts are a great example of fauxchitecture, or just application of out-of-contextitecture.

On a list of esthetic issues wrt Ion, I think I'd put the "ye olde" street lights well down the list. I say that as a complete supporter of ION/LRT by the way.

That retaining wall around the McDonald's looks massive.

I was thinking the same.  In the future, if developed, I'd think that even with the grade change you could have an effective street presence.

It was already high before King & Moore were lowered further… anyone know when or why that happened? It wasn't always that way.

They probably didn't want cars on a slope right in front of the rail crossing, and so they flattened out the area around the mainline, and moved the slope to the west of the Moore/Breithaupt intersection (and reconfigured that intersection while they were at it).

Why is there a no-left turn restriction on Willis (WB) to Caroline (SB) added with the Ion construction? What is the goal? It's not like there is a huge flow of traffic on Willis that would start backing up if someone is having trouble turning left for a few extra seconds. Is it temporary during Ion construction/Uptown streetscape construction or is it permanent? Or is the sign rotated and actually a no-left turn from Caroline (SB) on the Willis (EB).
Everyone move to the back of the bus and we all get home faster.

Frederick Station was receiving its top coat on the platform this morning.

Same with Borden! Also, a crew was out near Cedar pulling out all those white strips between the sections of concrete. Not sure if they were temporary and they replace them with something else (rubber?).

Because of all the work now on the platforms, the wooden enclosures for the anchor walls have all come down.

What was the rationale for those enclosures? Protecting from vandalism doesn't really make sense as they'll be exposed to that for the foreseeable future.
Reply
Protecting from vandalism until the security cameras are activated, which provide protection of another kind.
