ION - Waterloo Region's Light Rail Transit
Apparently they're testing the ramp to launch trains:

And if it truly is all about the consumer's choice, I guess they have no problem sharing that lane with Uber drivers.... Wink

Fun Fact: The "Allen" platform is narrower than all the other bi-directional platforms. There won't be a full winter enclosure here as a result.

Should mean an opportunity to make a winterized platform of the jumper-protection-subway-style, use the whole platform. Someday.

Are you suggesting platform screen doors? That's not happening.

It could... but certainly isn't any part of any current plan. But having winterized waiting is very helpful for transit in Canada, coming as an OCTranspo user prior to university.

Dubai has the only tram in the world I can think of with platform screen doors, because they have AC in the stations and trains.

I'm sorry - it just ain't gonna happen.

Don't several in South Korea, Japan, etc? Typically seems more about preventing people from jumping onto the tracks than climate control in those cases.

On conventional railways, monorails, automated systems, etc. - yes.  Not on light rail or trams.

Do you have any details on the "winter enclosure" that the other platforms will get? I don't remember seeing anything about that before.

Platform screen doors are typically used for high floor metros.

They are moreso used for less dramatic reasons than suicide prevention. They keep garbage from interfering with the tracks (particularly the 3rd rail). They prevent accidental falling off the platform. In high crowding conditions, they increase the capacity of the platform by allowing people to walk right up to the edge safely.

An at-grade system doesn't really have the same problem with people falling on the tracks. It's a lot easier to get back up. And garbage won't interfere with the power supply, since it's catenary wire, not 3rd rail.

My preferred solution to climate control is a train coming every 5 minutes to pick you up!

Ah thanks Canard, that makes sense.  Just couldn't picture it Smile

Funny that the picture is of Willis Way station but they said that it won't actually have the enclosure.

And interesting about the Allen platform, I also didn't realize it was narrower.  I guess they couldn't really widen the road any more there due to the buildings on both sides.
