Cannabis shops in Waterloo Region
Besides the LC and beer store, there's also over a dozen bars and restaurants one can get alcohol, and maybe one day when the liquor laws are changed there will be corner stores selling booze. Same goes for smokes, every corner stores sells em and that doesn't seem to bother anyone.

I don't think the point is that people are bothered by the cannabis shops, it's more that the number of shops (selling exactly the same product) seems ridiculously high (pun intended).

However, I think this will resolve itself in a year or so.

I suspect that the profitability is still just a target. However, many of the shops are owned by larger corporations that have substantial venture capital or large-scale funding backing them up, so they are willing to run at a loss for a while to build their brands and establish a business.

Bars and restaurants are different. They sell meals. Alcohol is mostly an adjunct to the food or live entertainment. People don't go there to buy alcohol to take home, as they do at the liquor and beer stores.

The good ones will succeed, the crappy ones will fail, and we'll be left with a few good stores. If there was a 500m rule we'd be left with whichever two got to DTK first, and they'd have no incentive to do better as they'd have a protected monopoly.

Indeed. While I'm an anti-capitalist, this is one case where I think it's good that capitalism can sort itself out. Legal weed is a new thing so there are a lot of business owners hoping to make their mark. The stores people prefer will prevail, the rest will close down. It beats having vacant storefronts.

So? They can't sell anything but pot. If they could run like cafes in Amsterdam or if cannabis was sold like cigarettes it'd be available everywhere, without any hours restricting sales or anything like that. I think that would be better. I don't really drink and I think alcohol should be sold in corner stores too.

I don't' think the gov't should be legislating the number of pizza places or shawarma shops anymore than they ought to limit the number of pot shops. If there's too many they'll close up, and just guessing from the number of customers I've seen in the DTK shops I really don't think there's going to be a dozen shops downtown in a year or something.

No surprise, we see our first victim of the new cannabis market. Phoenix Cannabis on Queen Street is up for sale: https://www.realtor.ca/real-estate/23926...-kitchener

I had no idea that they had done such an upscale renovation. In any event, far too large and far too expensive to be a successful weed shop, istm.

You know, it's funny. Walking down King St in both Kitchener and Waterloo there's like one successful weed shop in each of these cores which gets the lineups, and the others seem kind of deserted...

I think The House of Cannabis (on King) was the first. In November they had a sign that said they're "temporarily closing."

Which is odd because don't they all sell the same government produced junk? I rarely smoke and when I do, it's not from the government, so I'm not entirely sure how the retail side of things works.

That's the owner's real estate agent so it appears that Phoenix have canceled the lease rather than trying to sublet. $23/sqft gross is not particularly expensive, I think.

The reno was likely expensive but it's also rather, uhh, polarizing. The materials would look great for a casino but not necessarily for a restaurant or a normal retail store.

Real Estate Agents Really Love to Capitalize Every Single Word In Their Listings Because They Think It Will Cause People To Buy More Houses.
