Trails

There was a long gap between the two layers of asphalt being laid, presumably to allow the first layer to cure.

Asphalt doesn't really need to cure the way concrete does, especially for weeks at a time. Roads are paved and re-opened to heavier traffic without as much time.

Roads usually have 1-2 years between the first and second layer of asphalt because letting the first layer settle under traffic first makes the road more durable.

The trail probably has less settling I'd guess it's a scheduling question.

The iron horse trail is open again between John and Glasgow. I think they also widened it.

Great to hear that! It's been annoying me for the past few weeks.

I guess this is not going to be finished by today. (Picture taken yesterday, Dec. 30).

How long does “approximately December 31” last? Undecided Huh

At the rate they've been working it should be open mid February. Seems like there is only 2-3 weeks of actual work involved in the project so I wonder why it's being done in short bursts with long periods of nothing.

edit: I went by today and the bridge doesn't even look like it's painted yet. I don't know if it's weathering steel or not but the rust sure looks like the normal rust I see on the bare steel at work. It also looks like they just need to pave the decking and it should be ready to roll. They also locked the chains holding the fences to the bridge to keep people from using it.

That's definitely normal rust due to exposure to the elements, rather than CORTEN steel. The use of the CORTEN steel would have been nice to see. In France, there is a beautiful vantage point and recreation area that I love at le Chemin des Carrières which uses it and looks spectacular.

That's a beautiful sight.

I think the bridge that Weber street goes under the tracks is also corten steel.

They were pouring the deck today so hopefully it will be open in a few days.

I saw some security cars parked at the bridge tonight keeping an eye on the curing concrete. I can't fathom what took so long to do the pour, weather has been pretty mild for the last few weeks.

I asked one of the workers this morning when they thought it would be open and he said "end of next week" which seems like a long time Sad

Yes, city staff said it would take a week to cure, and they would open it after that....so, end of next week may just be hedging their bets.

It won't be done at that point, apparently they still need to pour curbs and some other parts.

Make sure you all go write your initials in the concrete while it's still wet.
