RE: Apollo Cinema - urbd - 06-20-2017 Time to revive this! Another great thing about Apollo... they host video game tournaments and you can also rent the venue for events at a very reasonable cost. Also there is a student discount and you can get a membership for discounts too. And yes, having drinks available makes a huge difference when you want to make a night out of going to see a movie. You go to Apollo, have a couple drinks and then you move to Grand Trunk or another bar. Fun night! RE: Apollo Cinema - panamaniac - 06-20-2017 Different people are looking for different things in their cinema experience. For me, Apollo and the Princess are generally more satisfying than the big chain multi-screen experience, although I've recently become a fan of those cheap Tuesday matinees! I was also an occasional visitor to the Frederick St cinemas, which aren't as well known as they deserve to be - istm a good option for families on a budget, among others. RE: Apollo Cinema - sixstringnorth - 03-07-2025 Love the Apollo. It's recently sold, anyone have any info or updates? Thanks. I mean, home movie technology advanced to the point where if I just want to watch a movie, my home is just as good: better seats, better snacks, better price, great screen and sound. The only reason I have to go to the movies is as (part of) a social activity. Apollo was perfect for that. RE: Apollo Cinema - Momo26 - 03-31-2025 Apollo has a lot of potential indeed. Such a big space. IMO they need to pound the Indie movie market segment/Oscar nominated/foreign film scene harder like Princess does and invest in more branding and social media marketing. Parking is usually OK in evenings and weekends but obviously can put people off coming to DTK in general. I'd love to see them get more into foreign films, Canadian films, film classics, etc. The second-run stuff I could do without. RE: Apollo Cinema - bravado - 03-31-2025 There was quite a blowup on the kitchener reddit about Apollo last week. Presumably the new owners have gone really hard into South Asian films and forced out the old employees. It also sounds like the only things that brought in the crowds before were the south asian films, so it's no surprise to me to focus on what brings in the revenue. RE: Apollo Cinema - Momo26 - 04-17-2025 They should have a mix. All movies. Isn't the old Landmark at Sportsworld supposed to become a South Asian theatre or SriLanken or something?
