Up until about the mid 1990s this was quite common, especially in residential projects. This picture here shows how many exist just in downtown Kitchener, but they're all over the region/country. Most were built from the 1970s-1980s, but then there was a gradual shift to begin designing buildings to be a lot slender and taller and we saw less and less of them constructed.

Ah fair enough, I had thought of many 'wide buildings' that are of course not tall, but in my mind was thinking massively wide buildings with equal height (more or less). More box then rectangular prism on it's side!

When they're wide they can only be so tall because of density guidelines

Any recent pics? I was just in the area but didn't snap a pic in time. Lots of the dark glass in now...

Yeah I'm curious how this is looking. Hopefully a little less imposing?

I'm perplexed by the numerous, seemingly small windows. I remember seeing that in floor plans and inquiring on the dimensions. It only seems on set/block of units has floor to ceiling windows (at least that's how the current glass installed looks). Majority of others seem to have 2 to 3 windows each (maybe one is a door although from ground level does not look big enough).

Curious to hear other people's thoughts...

Fully agree. Basically looks like a generic student building on Lester.

Agreed, I think once it is painted it will look better, but I wish they had commissioned a big art piece for the parking garage levels. A couple indentented concrete panels is not enough.

Is it too late to paint a big art piece on it? Could easily spin the narrative: In collaboration with xyz Big name artist'

On a similar note, I saw some amazing pieces of art in the laneways just west of Spidina, North of Kensington. They've done a good job.

I drove by a couple weeks ago and it still looked like a 20 story concrete wall. I suppose its possible things may have changed since then though.
