I had some training yesterday, Hoisting and Rigging, and we were talking about cranes and how many of them (like most of them) were built before 1970 — so many of the cranes we see might be at least 50 years old. It might explain why these cranes are unused at times. Likely they are not functioning as expected, and parts are harder and harder to come by. But still, for crane companies, it’s still cheaper to repair then build new cranes.

When they put the first crane up the first few pieces were put in place and then it took about two months until they put the rest of it up.

These towers are going to look so ugly, I would rather look at an under construction building for as long as possible

I completely agree, unsurprisingly. I'm glad someone is building on this end of the downtown, but these buildings are hideous. They look like they ought to be student buildings around the university, or better yet cast back to 1980s pomo craze.

They DID have a rather long shutdown which was probably somewhat covid related at worst and priority related at best.
Even though the tower crane isn't operational most days they do have a steady stream of concrete trucks and an excavator doing most of the work to form the podium these days and if not the mobile crane has been filling in.
I vaguely remember the podium portion of DTK and Charlie West taking a long time as well and that was sorted before the pandemic. We'll see but I'm not the least bit surprised that this stretch of King is developing more slowly than the more prime sections of downtown.
Let's not forget it's a massive parcel being redeveloped.

Could be very well that the majority of the podium portion doesn’t need large cranes, just use mobile ones for now, until the towers start being built.
