How about taking a photo over the hoarding using a selfie stick?

That would work. I also have a recently acquired drone, but I would be afraid of losing it in the hole. I did some test flights in a park and managed to crash into a tree.

I saw this video and thought it was relevant to this development, particularly how they built the utilities and roads first and are using multiple developers

Mods feel free to move this to a more appropriate thread

One thing that caught my eye in this article was the sentence:

I recall that the original plan was to renovate the office building, which is why it wasn't demolished with the rest of the plant. I hadn't heard of any change to that plan.

The approved development maintains the old office building and warehouse. Unless something has been modified since ZBA/OPA it should be staying, there isn't any demolition permits pending for those buildings, so it's more than likely The Record being incompetent.

They now have removed all the wood boards on the windows.  Either they are getting ready to renovate or demolish,  Ha ha, who knows.

There is no demolition permit for the old office building beyond the permit they originally got in 2019. Permit 19-127375 "Permit is for removal of interior partitions and finishes to the 7 storey office building facing Courtland Ave".

There is no new permit applications beyond those for the 3 apartment buildings.

So, there's now enough security on-site to clean up the office building and at least make it presentable, if it's not a full reno.

They now have put the boards back up on the higher levels and starting to brick the lower levels.  Is this building going to become a parking stucture?

Short answer is no, the site plan from the plan of subdivision and OPA/ZBA doesn't have an access road to the building so they'd need to get that approved in SPA but that gets rid of the plaza which Kitchener's Parks department would likely have issue with. There are no permits beyond the existing demo permit for the office building, meaning it is likely being done to secure the building.

From the engineering side of things it is certainly possible to turn it into a parking structure however there would be significant work required to make it functional and there is really no financial incentive for Auburn to do it. One would need to fit parking ramps into the structure, this alone would likely require a structural retrofit of the building which is not a cheap thing to do, possible yes but doesn't make a lot of sense financially.

The cranes seem rather close together.

Oh wow they've actually started...interesting. I've been over in Switzerland teaching for a while so I haven't kept track of what's going on in the region. It doesn't seem there are too many new proposals but that's not surprising, so at least some of the older projects are finally being started.

Have they done any more work?  Looks the same since the last update.

There is a significant part of a new floor, you can see it if you compare the base of the foreground crane, for example.
