Apple Self Storage -Overland Drive - Acitta - 05-26-2019

A new self-storage place is being built on Overland Dr.

There seems to be no limit to the amount of new storage space people need for their "stuff". Even to the point of paying more in storage fees than the "stuff" is worth!

Yep.. Though my first opinion is, what a waste of employment lands. These places might employ 3-5 people, though I could be wrong.

When you can only afford to live in a small space now, yet you dream of living some place larger later, you don't want to necessarily get rid of everything while you wait. Similarly, I'm sure that renting a storage unit is easier than finding a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment with decent sized closets and/or storage lockers in Waterloo Region.

Having moved from a much larger house into a condo, I will say that the correct answer is not offsite storage, but decluttering. Most people have vast quantities of "stuff" that is rarely or never used. When you move from a house to an apartment, or from a house to another house, likely you will discover many boxes in the basement that were never opened during the years since the previous move.

That said, some outdoor sporting equipment (a kayak or a snowmobile, for example) may need off-site storage. But spending $50-100 a month really does add up ...

Other uses: Some people may need a place to keep their "stuff" while they are relocating to(or from) the area, renovating a house, repairing a flooded basement, etc...

Yes, absolutely, there are exceptions. But few people really need off-site storage while living in a house, apartment or condo ...

Yeah, it's not the existence of such businesses I have concerns with, but their proliferation. This will be the second such self-store in that neighbourhood, there's already one on Hayward near the ballyard.

Where else would you put them but industrial areas such as this?

RE: Apple Self Storage -Overland Drive - KevinL - 06-04-2019

U-Haul has some right downtown at Victoria and Charles.

RE: Apple Self Storage -Overland Drive - robdrimmie - 06-04-2019

Are you suggesting new ones should also be built downtown? Or that none should be built at all?

Clearly there's a desire, whether or not we all believe that it is a positive indicator. Given that demand, where should facilities to satisfy it be established if not in an industrial park?

RE: Apple Self Storage -Overland Drive - KevinL - 06-04-2019

I'm not saying we shouldn't build them, I'm just concerned how many they are and the valuable space they take up. I'd be happier if U-Haul moved out of downtown and those customers switched to the less-densely developed locations, in fact.

I don't know how we convince society to stop getting so much stuff, but I think we'd be better off if there wasn't so much of a need. Just expressing a frustration, I guess.

I do understand what you're saying, and I generally share that frustration. If they were replacing one of the buildings more towards Hayward, or building new space in a dense area I'd agree about the wasted space but I don't think that applies here. The space where they are moving in is unused and mostly is old worn-down lots.

Assuming such facilities must exist - and I agree the world will be better once that is not true, much like payday loan operations - I can't think of a better spot that this one to build them.

U-Haul is not the only one downtown. There is also Woodside Self Storage at Queen and Woodside.

And a bit further out, Access Storage at Ottawa and Charles Sts.
