Google uses LIDAR to capture their 3D imagery, which won't capture moving objects well. That's why you're not seeing vehicles on the road!

The problem with trying to use the Bruce extension for a detour is that you'd also have to do something to the off-ramp from 85 northbound to Wellington Eastbound. If you look at the bingemans page http://bingemans.com/hwy7/index.html that ramp goes away eventually, making room for the extension. But they might not want to get rid of it yet.

Maybe, but if Bruce street goes through, getting off at Victoria and taking Bruce will get you to the same place.

Drove through the Shirley/Wellington/Riverbend 3-way stop yesterday and took me a minute to realize what was different. Looks like they've cleared all of the area north of the buildings between Wellington and Shirley (https://www.google.ca/maps/@43.4675632,-80.466006,536m/data=!3m1!1e3) and all that's left are a bunch of piles of woodchips.

anyone know how the Bruce St extension will cross the tracks? above/below at grade?

RE: Highway 7 - Kitchener to Guelph - SammyOES - 03-06-2016

I believe the extension will be below grade similar to 85. But that's from squinting at one of the diagrams in a presentation I found online.

Under; likewise for the Wellington-Edna connection and the replacement ramps. Only Victoria and Shirley are currently planned for 2015–2019, though.

Final Design & Construction Report!

A Bunch of drawings to look through, I am exited for the changes this project will bring, even before the arrival of the highway itself!

It does not look like the Bruce extension will be part of this work unfortunately, however some pretty significant changes around the Wellington / Shirley exit.

EDIT: Is the Bruce extension truly required at this point? Could one not use 85 to connect Victoria & Wellington with the bridge out?

I wonder what timeline there is for the replacement of the Wellington, Frederick and rail bridges. I notice that the new Victoria St. bridge won't have supports in between the collector and express lanes in that area, which makes me wonder if the plan is ultimately to get rid of the express/collector system in that area.

RE: Highway 7 - Kitchener to Guelph - kps - 03-07-2016

Frederick and Wellington bridges are staying as is, AFAIK; there are no additional lanes at either.

The latest plan I know of (2014 initial design report from the MTO site) calls for 4 separate cutouts under the rail line, one for each new ramp.

My feeling is that the only reason the express/collector system (is this the only instance in Ontario/Canada of express and collector lanes outside of Toronto?) exists is because of the method of construction o the Victoria and Wellington bridges required supports (couldn't be one wide span), or it wasn't reasonable or was too expensive to go with a continuous span.

So you could very well be right - if the columns aren't there, there really isn't a reason to have the express/collector system.

I think that's just a side effect of the advancement in structural technology over the last 40 years.

The Frederick Bridge will also be fully replaced. It has had several 'band-aid' rehabilitative work over the past year, but not a full rehabilitation in anticipation of being fully replaced to accommodate the new acceleration/deceleration lane taper widths for the new Highway 7 interchange. Note that the Frederick Street bridge's parapet walls were never replaced either, and with the exception of the rail bridge, it is (sadly) the only remaining vehicular bridge on the Conestoga Parkway with the original, vintage MTO double rail guard parapet walls. There has also been various concrete patching and sealing done to the structure to prolong the life without doing a full rehabilitation.

Wellington Street on the other hand is not planned to be replaced and over the past 15 years had 2 extensive rehabilitations (with the most recent being last summer).

I have seen plans for the Frederick Street replacement bridge, and if I can find them again, I will post them here.

Ah, you're right. It's in the same document, p352.
