RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - panamaniac - 04-18-2016

I've been seeing ads for "Blyth Academy Waterloo" (sic), a private secondary school specializing in maths and science that is to open in September.  It's website indicates that it will be "embedded in Kitchener-Waterloo’s Tannery District" (sic).  Does anyone know where this school is going to be located?  I was wondering if they might be a tenant in the factory at the end of Michael St that is currently undergoing renovations, although I see their info session were held in 260 King St W, which is the building at the corner of College that houses Shoppers Drug Mart.

Their website blatantly says 'Located at 260 King St W', so the 'Tannery District' thing seems to be a stretch in that case.

Gosh, I was looking at the website and didn't see the bubble in the picture!  I wonder if we should tell them that their campus is actually in Kitchener (gasp!)?  Smile

Renovation work at the Walper Hotel has reached the lobby, which has been stripped out. I thought it might be expanded as part of the renovations, but apparently not. I think a new plate window has been installed at the lobby, but so far there has been no indication that upper floor windows will be replaces, which surprises me a bit. I

The lobby was stripped some months back, if I recall. The entry is generally closed up, though, so I understand why you may not have seen that beore.

I guess it's because of the new window - you can now look in.  There's a render in the window that shows the final product - looks very slick and modern.

I don't think its news for the Food thread (yet) but the pizza place on King St E at Eby is being renovated as "King Supreme Pizza/Wings". I'm a bit surprised as I thought the building was slated for demolition.

The future Prime Pita location on King St E beside the Dollarama is being gutted this week. I wonder if that means a franchisee has been found and renovations will begin?

Not bad looking, but it seems a shame that the design didn't put a street-facing entrance on the end unit.

Hey, does anyone know what's going on with the empty lot on King Street between Kinkaku and Manulife (221 King St W)? Its been vacant for quite a while now

Has there been movement? It's been vacant for at least 7+ years

RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - panamaniac - 04-24-2016

It's been empty since Ackers Furniture burned down. I keep waiting, in vain it seems, for Manulife to announce that they have acquired the property and are expanding the King St side of Manulife Plaza. Some day, perhaps, some day.

RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - Lens - 04-24-2016

There's no reason a new building with a good streetfront couldn't be built on the lot. Maybe something like one of these:

Hmmm, has Manulife already acquired it?  On Kitchener's GIS system, the vacant land (221 King W and 227 King W) is listed together with the Manulife property (255 King W).  I'm not quite sure of how to interpret that fact.

That said, there does not appear to be any impending development.

No reason except, I suspect, for zoning. Where are they gonna place all the setbacks and the required parking?
