By "it" do you mean the video of WRPS officers arresting a young black male in an unnecessarily violent way?

Yeah, WRPS's (and council/police board's response) to BLM has been disappointing to the least. No other issue has drawn a crowd of that magnitude, and yet, they're basically happy to give non-answers. One wonders if those in charge even realize what a real answer would be.

Yes. I wasn't able to post the tweet initially and won't be able to for the next hour or so. But just felt like I wanted to post something.

The Twitter user that originally posted it (https://twitter.com/fitsumareguy/) is a Record reporter. I wonder if he was told to delete the video?

WRPS are now publishing their use of force incidents: https://outline.com/x3nrs6

Someone on Reddit broke down the racial interactions which is interesting. Unsurprisingly, people of colour - in particular black people - are involved in more of these incidents. Blacks were involved in nearly 17% of incidents despite only being 3% of our population:

"No firearms were fired by regional police in interactions with the public in 2020." This is a very good thing. If I understood correctly, tasers were used 19 times in the 301 incidents. I would like to see this be lower yet, but at least it's under 10%.

112 calls about a dangerous weapon, 49 911 calls, 47 emotionally disturbed calls (and 93 other types of calls). Given that, de-escalation seems to be producing some results. It will be good to see whether progress can continue in future years.

As to the race data, while there is clearly on issue, I don't think we can entirely ignore socioeconomic factors: people struggling to make a living are far more likely to experience an encounter with the police than those in well-paid jobs and comfortable houses. I don't have a good model to account for that, though.

The region has approved a contract to spend 44 million dollars to renovate the downtown police station. Meanwhile, they are begging for 106 million for the transit hub...

Meanwhile, the Region is laying off 75 full-time staff members. This includes those that work in childcare and family support programs.

Priorities.

But yeah, give the police another $44 million. It's never going to stop. The only time the police are available is when you're black and driving 2 over the speed limit. Or just black or indigenous. Just don't be either one of those.

And don't be a family in need of support, as you're unimportant.
