General Urban Waterloo Updates and Rumours
Residents fret as Waterloo developer pushes for two towers at up to twice the permitted height
Hygate Development Corp. is proposing two towers ranging from seven to 12 storeys at 215-229 Lexington Rd. near the Highway 85 expressway. The height limit is six storeys.

One guy quoted in the article lives on a street that is separated from the proposed development by a large church property.

If I'm not mistaken, the owner of the Shops building (aka what's left of the Waterloo Towne Square building) only owns the building footprint and nothing more. I think I first learned about it when there was a question about the building owner providing bike racks (or some other kind of furniture) outside the building. Since they didn't own any other land, they were not able to do so.

Interesting trivia from the article:

Quote:Fast-growing Waterloo is home to two-thirds of new highrise residences approved in the region between 2016 and 2021

How does that fit in the overall Regional picture?  Does Kitchener have a higher "beds per project" ratio due to higher towers? Or is Waterloo still number 1 there, too?

Nope. The VanMar project will be at the opposite corner: the house with the cool overhang (which is boarded up), Gina's hair salon, and the property behind. Gina's owned all of those properties and appears to have sold them to VanMar. Gina's is actually a real estate company now, they are assembling land in other parts of Uptown as well. Very smart move on their part.

This was demolished last week.

Can someone point me to the thread of the building being built on the Uptown side of Union near King (across from Sorbara Law)? Seems like a nice infill project and I'd love to see the renders. Thx!

The address looks to be 30 Union St E; I can't find a thread that refers to that, though.

Hmm... I saw a Zehr Group sign on the fencing so I assumed they were the developers. Took a look on their website and couldn't find mention of it. I assumed there would be a thread for it here but also no luck.

Zehr is the developer of the project and it's a new rental project that they're doing, the project is called "STRIDE union", it's the first project in Zehr's new "STRIDE" rental buildings. It seems at least from reading on their website that it's just typical purpose built rentals.

Here's a link to their website about it: https://www.zehrgroup.ca/stride
