I just don't get it. Sabletine was a favourite stop of ours when biking from Waterloo to Kitchener, in midtown, right at the LRT stop (walkscore 93). They have moved to a location next to the highway on Lexington (walkscore 26) sometime in the past two years. The person at the register (with whom I had a somewhat animated discussion) thought they were doing better business at the new location because there was parking. What? Do the 10 condo buildings nearby not have residents that go to buy baked goods? I can see that the work space is better in a new build, sure, but who lives near there?

I guess there's still Vincenzo's. Sigh. I really am not thrilled about going to the new Sabletine location. It is mostly accessible off-road but the bit on Lexington, which is still off-road, is up a hill and next to a big road.

If anyone is unfamiliar, the concept of community fridges started in The Other Berlin a few years ago and have now been adopted across cities around the world. A group of people started a local one downtown Kitchener outside of Full Circle Foods at the corner of Charles and Queen Streets. It's housed in a wooden shed in the parking lot of the grocery store. It's a great project that serves everyone and fills a the niche of quick, immediate accessible food as opposed to going to a food bank.

Currently they are low on donations and are asking for more as things have slowed down the last couple weeks. If you'd like to donate, this Instagram post has a list of acceptable foods/drinks, but to summarize they basically accept anything except raw meats, eggs/milk, alcohol (due to the fact this is open to anyone) and anything damaged/rotten/half eaten/etc. Whether you have a single apple in your backpack or go out of your way to purchase something, any donation helps. You are also free to take any items you feel you need.

We have a thread for pizza, I figure there should be one for burgers as well? Especially ones that survive delivery during COVID times, or have a physical location that allows safe onsite dining?

I just tried YUMMY Burgers off Northfield in Waterloo (same plaza as Classic Indian). Everything's made fresh to order. Ate it in their parking lot, and it was quite good!

Prior to COVID I was also a fan of burgers from the following places (listed alphabetically). Haven't tried them since COVID, or they're not even offered on their menus:

Abe Erb (not offering food since COVID)

Crazy Canuck (haven't tried since COVID)

Lancaster Smokehouse (not on menu since COVID)

The Bent Elbow (haven't tried since COVID)

The Works (tried once since COVID, but they didn't pack well for takeout - it was a soggy mess by the time it got tous)

Good morning everyone,

I am looking for interesting and unique restaurant suggestions please. Everyone here always has great ideas that I had never considered before or was even aware of. I am looking to take my 8 and 10 year old daughters so if you provide ideas could you please add if it is kid friendly.

Perhaps we could identify the uniquness of the restaurant like: vegan, a particular specialty, best eggs Benedict etc.

Looking forward to your ideas

A foodie friend raved about Naranj several times so we decided to give it a try last Friday. My friend said the breads and the mezzeh were amazing. And so they were.

We were there for lunch so we limited our selection to soup, salad and mezzeh.

Both of us ordered Naranj Soup (7.99).

This is a smoked wheat soup with some toppings. I have never heard of 'smoked wheat soup' but it was hearty and delicious.

After soup I chose the Maqdoos Salad (11.99) because the picture of it looked amazing.

The Magdoos Salad was beautifully presented but the taste was a bit too strange for my liking. Perhaps it was the eggplant preserved in olive oil or the red pepper paste that didn't please my tastebuds.

My husband chose the Jarjeer and Grilled Halloumi Cheese (12.99) salad.

The salad looked appetizing and the (perfectly) grilled halloumi cheese made me wish I had chosen that salad instead of the Magdoos Salad.

After the soup and salad we were happy that we only chose two mezzeh from the menu. We chose the Hummus Beiruti (7.99) and had a plate of 8 Yalanji (11.99). The Yalanji is stuffed grape leaves that is available at most middle eastern restaurants.

The Hummus Beiruti came with fresh baked flat bread and I have to say that it was probably the tastiest hummus I have ever eaten.

The Yalanji was also delicious. It was full of subtle flavours that other stuffed grapes lack.

I was too full for dessert but my husband has a sweet tooth so he tried the Kishk Al-Omaraa (6.99). This dessert is the Naranj house special. It is a light and creamy milk flan topped with strands of cotton candy and crunchy pistachios. It was delicious. I know because our server brought two spoons in case I wanted to try it. And I did.

Naranj is a Syrian success story. The folks who own this restaurant came to Canada in 2015 and, according to an article in the Waterloo Chronicle, they employ 15 people. And as you can probably tell from the pictures this is not your run-of-the-mill shawarma joint. This restaurant is large, clean and nicely decorated.

My only complaint is that the service was a tad slow and the restaurant was too cold. Regardless, we will be back to try some of their other dishes.
