ION - Waterloo Region's Light Rail Transit
This morning as I was passing by, they were paving the dedicated Caroline->Erb right-turn-lane and setting up the forms for the concrete pour of the SB embedded track in the intersection:

Out of frame to the NW, they dumped a pile of ballast on the SB track adjacent to the intersection.

Out of frame to the South, they were pouring an additional segment of the SB embedded track north of the Caroline/Father David Bauer Drive intersection. Workers were taping the boot to the rail, and sealing the top with the wide, black tape to keep the concrete out during the pour.

I expect nearly the whole thing to be poured by evening, with one lift of asphalt cooling in the zone NE of the tracks in Erb/Caroline. It's pretty exciting.

And the crossing at Seagram appears fully open!

I see in the latest ION traffic update that King and William will be closing around September 21. Should we expect Erb and Caroline to be open by then?
Reply
I would expect so.
That's likely why it is listed as "around" Sept 21. It will probably close the day after Erb opens.

They only have the small section of Erb left to pave and the little wedge between the nb and SB tracks. There is one little gap in the embedded SB track that needs another weld still.

As i mentioned the other day the antique looking lights of uptown were extended to John, but beyond that, south of John, they have installed the overhead lights with the LED fixtures.

Almost all the cat poles are now in between William and union or should be by end of day.

Lots of landscaping progress between Wellington and union along king.

The grh TPSS site seems nearly prepped for it to be installed.

What was the landscaping between Wellington and Union? I biked that last night but didn't see anything different then from the past several weeks... did they just start today?

Mostly just freshly dumped dirt along the edges of road and sidewalk to bring it level for the hydro-seed or sod. A few random single sidewalk panels had been poured today as well.

I was down as far as the north side of the grade separation at Moore this afternoon. That hole gets gets longer and wider and deeper and cluttered. There is no way wellington reopens by the end of September and the planned late-October opening for Moore seems unlikely too - but then again I am always amazed how quickly things can come together. Hoping I am wrong!

Does anyone know the scheduled opening of the King Street underpass?

It has long been stated as the vague "late-2016", but the City of Kitchener site lists 08-Dec-2016.

With three major intersections opening up in the next few days, I'm starting to get a bit depressed. Construction is almost at an end, folks! Sad

Yeah, I know, sorry... I'm one of those annoying people who is just loving this upheaval of the whole city.  Once construction finishes, things are going to be very dark and quiet for a while, until closer to the end of 2017.

Edit - After looking at the Functional Design Plans, I think what's happened is the Left Turn Lane is just painted way, way too far ahead:

At least the road hasn't opened yet, there.

A bit further up Duke, this retaining wall has been finished. Nice to see it complement the existing buildings' brickwork.

It hadn't even occurred to me that that was new - a testiment either to my ignorance or that they did a really good job disguising it!

Was hoping Doors Open at Google would have afforded great views of the grade sep, but unfortunately the tours didn't go anywhere near the windows on that side.
