Watch others do the same ofc...what does this mean: commercial building owners suffer and small company's namely food and retail around these traditionally medium large to large employers suffer horrendously.
What other ripple effect does this have? In a region that was fueled by tech growth on the premise that people needed to MOVE here to take these jobs, does KWs digital renaissance come to a screetching halt?

There was a thread for the project proposed there, https://www.waterlooregionconnected.com/...p?tid=1152 , but it's been so long since we heard anything who knows if it's the same proposal.
I hope they go ahead and do this. That contemporary glass addition looks incredible next to the old buildings.

Not all companies will do this, but some certainly will. That will reduce the demand for office space, which should in turn reduce the lease rates. Some other companies might decide to lease more space rather than less (since it will be more affordable) and better enable distancing. Maybe.
The other impact is primarily on the lunch and coffee business. But many of the bigger tech companies provide in-house coffee and lunches, so the impact may be more on the catering business than on the actual restaurants. Maybe.
Really, this hasn't happened before, so it's hard to know what the impact will be.

I work for a company where the idea of working from home en masse was unfathomable - now the entire organization is work from Home, productivity up and wording like we will be a work from home organization go forward (with some people cycling in now and again) is being used. Across the whole organization, whether to continue leasing about 1.5MILLION sqft of office space is being debated.
It's not hard to know the impact to commercial space and the delayed ripple effect will not be good. Hope I'm wrong

New Burger Priest Location.
What's going on here?: Divine new burger joint moving into former DQ in Waterloo
‘Commandments’ include quality, purity and simplicity
https://www.waterloochronicle.ca/news-st...-waterloo/
A new burger joint moving into a once popular spot for ice cream in Waterloo says it has a beef.
“We’ve got a beef with burger joints these days,” its website reads. “They use frozen patties. Or, they over-season their food. Or, they use ingredients that have no place in, or on, a burger.
“Who needs mango, pear and pine nuts? Silly.”
The Burger’s Priest, coming soon to the former Dairy Queen location at 212 King St. S., according to a local real estate representative, has a mission of keeping it simple, based on founder Shant Mardirosian’s love of fresh, classic, old-fashioned burger.
The menu is anything but ordinary, however, featuring more than 20 different signature burgers — including high, fiery, smoked and vegan varieties — as well as a secret menu with stacked varieties, featuring breaded, cheese-stuffed portabello mushroom caps. Other burgers, like the Vatican City, are smashed for succulence.
The 600-square-foot building on King Street South almost looks like a church.
Mardirosian, a California native, started the business after moving to Toronto to attend Seminary school with the hope of eventually becoming a priest.
His “Burger Redemption” began in 2010, with 350 square feet, four stools and a small meat grinder on Toronto’s Queen Street East. Since that time, more than 20 locations have been established across Ontario, including one in Guelph.
The menu also features a variety of chicken burgers, strips, hot dogs, sides such as poutine and chili, ice cream sandwiches and shakes.

There's a variance request for 120 King St N (at Central). It looks like they want to demolish the house and build a 3 storey building when zoning permits 4-20 storeys.

I was thinking that it's interesting that they're asking to go below the minimum height, (and presumably decrease density as a result)...and then I remembered about parking minimums. How much does someone want to bet that the limiting factor on that development is parking....

Actually, the sign says they intend to build a two-storey building -- at 9.55m high. Those will be some tall floors.

So it does. That's what I get for skimming the sign.

It's nice that it's street-facing and not separated from the intersection by a sea of parking. Does anyone know if a site plan is available anywhere?

Indeed, that is an improvement, although it matches the former Chapters across the street, which looks better than it is, while the building is physically at the street, there is no activation of the street because there is no access to the building except off the parking lot.
I cannot tell if the same will be true here though.
