In reality it's the fact that losing their pseudo monopoly status makes the business unsustainable. The union representing the workers is expecting around 100 locations to close this year.
Theft will contribute to this, but also losing 60% of their business may also explain it.
Provincial estimates showed that the Beer Store’s percentage of Ontario’s alcohol market is expected to plunge to 15 per cent by 2026-27 from 41.1 per cent in 2024 as a result of expanded alcohol retailing.
