First time I've heard of that! What an interesting idea to include in an MMORPG.
On the topic of video games and pandemics, I'll recommend the RTS game Plague Inc: Evolved in which you strategically develop a virus with the attempt to kill everyone in the world (and there is an expansion called The Cure in which, yeah, you try to cure it).
