Someone please explain to me why Waterloo always gets the major regional infrastructure projects. LRT, Transit Yard, Hospital, now an emergency services facility. It makes no sense to have all these services in the north end of the region when a hug part of the regions population is south of Waterloo. Waterloo gets to reap the development fees, taxed and the impact on local economy. Enough already, spread the wealth

1. Universities are big money operations with a big orbit of more money, other than Toyota in Cambridge, nothing is close in terms of dollars + influence in the region.
2. Presumably the transit yard has to go at the end of the LRT line... There's another transit operations centre in Cambridge, they just kinda go where the big empty industrial land is.
3. The hospital is genuinely a question mark to me, I still don't get it. It still seems like a choice made because land was available, not because growth or population is expected to be nearby.

There's nothing requiring it, many lines have yards more centrally along their length. It's just a question of where the land is available.

The Mississauga LRT has the maintenance yard at the 407. It will be in the middle once Brampton wakes up and joins, which it will.

Here is the link to the City of Waterloo bid page.
If I had to guess, it would include possible relocation of the existing paramedic station at the Westmount Rd Waterloo Park Entrance. Since the bid doesn't mention it, I wouldn't foresee this location including anything other than a paramedic station.

Yeah for a yard you only need space and a place to put tracks. They could build one at the SunLife parking lot if they really wanted by building a spur that goes off King.

Not to derail the thread to talk about the LRT, the current maintenance and storage facility lot is about 41,000 m2. The Sunlife parking lot is about 34,000 m2. What's the minimum that a storage yard would need if it did not include a heavier maintenance shop?

It's entirely dependent on how many trains you want to store at the yard. There's a variety of factors that influence it for example: how long the line is, frequency of the line, are trains operating in singles, pairs, or triplets (Eglinton), will it need space for future growth, the type of vehicle (Flexity Freedoms require different space constraints then Citadis Spirits), is it storing trains for just one line or two, It's ultimately not a simple answer given so many inputs.
When you're picking a spot you also need to consider other factors as well like land cost and availability of land. So let's say you figured out what size you need based on the factors mentioned you have to find a piece of land that could fit those requirements, if you can't you'd have to consider multiple yards so it's not really a straight answer.
Now if we were to consider a yard with 4 storage tracks with a capacity of 24 Flexity Freedoms (9 more than us). Lets hypothetically say the yard doesn't have any parking for operators just track and some walking space, you'd need 3000sqm plus some area for switches to connect into the main line. So you don't need a substantial amount of space for a yard, the sizing just depends on a whole plethora of factors.

There was a proposal right near that - Overland Drive was one proposed yard location before they settled on Dutton.
