The COVID-19 pandemic
Another positive report today, with 459 new cases in Ontario for a 2.9% increase. 593 recovered and 86 dead for a net reduction of 220 active cases. There are now 4,900 active cases given 10,205 recoveries and 1,082 deaths. 2614 confirmed positives to date among LTC facility residents.

277,552 tests to date with 12,958 tests for the day. 999 cases currently hospitalized (+22) and 233 in the ICU (-2). Only 23% of the hospitalized cases are in the ICU.

Quebec added 944 cases today, with the rate of increase steady at 3.6%. 214,047 tests done to date, about 4,000 in the last 24h. 1684 currently hospitalized (+143) and 214 in ICU (+4).

In some ways (literally but also in other ways) NZ is from the future. (It's also sometimes stuck in the past; Waterloo has gotten much better than Wellington in terms of bicycle infrastructure in the last 5 years for example). In this context, what we've seen in NZ is at first a quick decline in active cases but then the decline plateaus. I guess we're stuck with the longer-lasting cases. You can see the NZ graph here:

https://thespinoff.co.nz/society/30-04-2...-april-30/

The increases have been single-digit absolute numbers for the past 10 days or so; sometimes the number is negative because they reclassified probable cases from the previous day as not a case. Net decreases dropped from numbers in the 50s to numbers in the 20s; yesterday the number recovered was 12. Still really good but it'll take a while for the number to get to 0. And that's assuming that opening NZ a bit continues to go well. Which I hope it does.

Another positive report today, with 421 new cases in Ontario for a 2.6% increase. 620 recovered and 39 dead for a net reduction of 238 active cases. There are now 4,662 active cases given 10,825 recoveries and 1,121 deaths. 2722 confirmed positives to date among LTC facility residents.

294,054 tests to date with 16,502 tests for the day -- a new record for the daily number of test. 1017 cases currently hospitalized (+18) and 225 in the ICU (-8). 22% of the hospitalized cases are in the ICU.

A very encouraging end to April; the number of active cases is back down to where it was two weeks ago, and dropping at nearly 5% per day. The ICU patient count is also trending down and is down over 10% from the peak. LTC outbreaks seem to be getting under control. We're not out of the woods yet, but I can faintly see what looks like might be a path back to (the new) normal.

Quebec added 1100 cases today, with the rate of increase up slightly at 4.0%. 219,367 tests done to date, about 5,300 in the last 24h. 1498 currently hospitalized (-150) and 218 in ICU (+4). Hospitalization number still unreliable.

Quebec is actually mildly disappointing right now. After fighting off the major outbreak and getting the daily (total confirmed) case increase down to the 4% range, they have now struggled with getting it any further. The number of new cases today was almost 3x that of Ontario, even ignoring the per capita rate. Let's hope that this is a short-term blip and they can resume their progress.

The new-case count ticked up to 511 today in Ontario for a 2.6% increase, only the second time over 500 in the past eight days. 565 recovered and 55 dead for a net reduction of 109 active cases. There are now 4,553 active cases given 11,390 recoveries and 1,176 deaths. The number of recoveries is now much higher, which makes sense since there are still over 4500 active cases.

310,359 tests to date with 16,305 tests for the day, so it appears that the testing levels have indeed been ratcheted up again. 977 cases currently hospitalized (-40) and 221 in the ICU (-4).

Testing levels so far (roughly approximated):
  • 4,000/day until 10 April
  • 6,000/day until 14 April
  • 9,000/day until 20 April
  • 12,000/day until 29 April
  • 16,000/day currently

Quebec added 1010 cases today, the rate of increase back down to 3.5%. 228,693 tests done to date, about 9,300 in the last 24h for a big increase in testing. 1516 currently hospitalized (+18) and 222 in ICU (+4).

So this came up on Facebook about comparing numbers across jurisdictions: Quebec counts cases where there are symptoms and a link to a test-confirmed case. I don't know what Ontario does. NZ counts them as probable cases and does not report them to the WHO.

The recovered number per day is quite small now, like a dozen, vs 3-6 new cases (which have either been close contacts or under investigation).

Today’s report shows 19 more positive cases in the Region of Waterloo.  The number of deaths stands at 81.

https://www.regionofwaterloo.ca/en/healt...egion.aspx

I’m glad there are no spikes in the numbers locally.  Unfortunately, covid-19 is not going to go away until there is a vaccine or we reach herd immunity—when 60 to 70% of the population have been infected.   And that might mean up to two more years of misery.

There will be restrictions for some time to come yet, to be sure. 60-70% won't be reached anytime soon, I don't think, in any country -- not even in NYC. Effective treatments should hopefully be available later this year and that will help the situation, but a widely available vaccine (available in tens of millions of doses in Canada, for example) is surely well over a year away still.

The new-case count ticked back down to 434 in Ontario for a 2.5% increase. 615 recovered and 40 dead for a net reduction of 221 active cases. There are now 4,332 active cases given 12,005 recoveries and 1,216 deaths -- that's looking like it will be a roughly 10% mortality rate among confirmed cases (asymptomatic cases that were never tested would significantly drop that).

327,505 tests to date with another daily testing record at 17,146 (2.5% of daily tests were positive). 1,010 cases currently hospitalized (+33) and 232 in the ICU (+11).

Quebec added 2009 cases today, including 1317 cases previously confirmed but not reported due to a software error. The net rate of increase was only 2.3%. 232,805 tests done to date, about 4,100 in the last 24h. 218 cases currently in ICU (-4). Will not report total hospitalization numbers for Quebec as these do not appear to be reliable.

Charting new cases as a percentage of total cases (the usual percentage that's being reported) and as a percentage of active confirmed cases (which really tells us better how many others the current patients are infecting.

The new-case count ticked back down to 370 in Ontario for a 2.5% increase. 500 recovered and 84 dead for a net reduction of 214 active cases. There are now 4,118 active cases given 12,505 recoveries and 1,300 deaths.

342,060 tests to date with 14,555 tests done -- somewhat lower, possibly due to the weekend. Again, 2.5% of daily tests were positive. 984 cases currently hospitalized (-26) and 225 in the ICU (-7).

(Corrected at 12:23 ...)

Quebec added 758 cases today for another low increase, 2.4%. 239,174 tests done to date, about 6,400 in the last 24h. 218 cases currently in ICU (+0).

Yes! Will fix that now. Thanks.

The new-case count was fairly steady 387 in Ontario for a 2.5% increase, 9.3% of active cases. 274 recovered and 61 dead for a net increase of 52 active cases, only the second increase in ten days. There are now 4,170 active cases given 12,779 recoveries and 1,361 deaths.

352,714 tests to date with 10,654 tests done -- it looks like part of a weekend pattern. Again, 3.6% of daily tests were positive, higher than usual but expected given the smaller number of tests (a week ago it was 4.8%). 1043 cases currently hospitalized (+59) and 223 in the ICU (-2).

Quebec added 758 cases today for another 2.4% increase. 243,363 tests done to date, about 4,200 in the last 24h. 218 cases currently in ICU (+0 for the second straight day).
