The COVID-19 pandemic
SATURDAY 2021-05-01

Waterloo Region reported 56 new cases for today (9.2% of the active cases) and no additional ones for yesterday for a total of 65; 453 new cases for the week (-74), averaging 10.0% of active cases. 569 active cases, -81 in the last seven days.

Next testing report on Tuesday.

Next vaccination report on Monday.

Ontario reported 3,369 new cases today with a seven-day average of 3,618 (-104). 3,964 recoveries and 29 deaths translated to a decrease of 624 active cases and a new total of 37,438. -4,035 active cases for the week and 192 deaths (27 per day). 46,803 tests for a positivity rate of 7.20%. The positivity rate is averaging 8.10% for the past seven days, compared to 8.23% for the preceding seven.

900 patients in ICU (+17 today, +67 for the week) and a total hospital population of 2,152 (-125 for the week). The hospital population seems to have stabilized in the 2200s for the moment, but the ICU admissions (which lag hospital admissions) are still going up, albeit not as rapidly as before.

107,700 doses of vaccine administered, with a seven-day average of 103,902. At this pace, the dose count will reach 70% of the provincial population on 2021-06-15 (+1 days). The weekly vaccination total was down 7.2% from the week before -- and this doesn't appear to be supply, unless the province is holding some back until the next shipment (there are still 400K doses in inventory, and the last delivery was on Tuesday).

Waterloo Region reported 44 new cases for today (7.6% of the active cases) and none more for yesterday for 62; 455 new cases for the week (-5), averaging 10.7% of active cases. 559 active cases, -93 in the last seven days.

Well case numbers are looking slightly better.

But what's with vaccination numbers. Our region losing supply almost explains our numbers...and I would certainly prefer lower numbers to more vaccines...they should go to those most in need.

But the provincial numbers are also significantly down. We were pushing 130k a week ago, 90k is a 30% decrease?!

The 130k days were from AstraZeneca. We've now returned to same Pfizer + Moderna volumes that we were at before the AstraZeneca eligibility opened up (back when AstraZeneca was going unused), as we've run out of AstraZeneca.

Starting this week Pfizer deliveries have picked up, Ontario will be getting 112k/day. Beyond that it's a question of what else we receive. We're expecting some Moderna, but their deliveries have been unreliable. If they can manage 1M every two weeks (which is more than they ever have) that's still only 27k/day for Ontario, for a total of 139k/day in Ontario.

We might get some AstraZeneca from the US, but with India blocking exports we're cut off from the Covax supply. The Johnson & Johnson doses that we did receive came from the highly questionable Emergent factory in Baltimore, so we'll see if they're even usable, and the volume is again tiny.

Moderna says they'll get us more volume in June, but for May I really wouldn't be counting on much significant volume beyond the Pfizer supply. I think the only way that might change is if Moderna starts exporting from the US this month.

1M doses (of Pfizer, probably?) delivered to Ontario today (or possibly yesterday) so the inventory should be OK for the moment. I do expect that they slowed down the pace as the stocks were getting lower, hopefully the pace will pick up again in the next few days.

Ontario isn't that high a percentage of Canada's population, 1M is Pfizer and Moderna. 786k/week of Pfizer for Ontario at the new 2M/week delivery rate. That's a daily average of 112k, which is down from the recent AstraZeneca-induced peak.

We hit 1M delivered this week because of the Moderna, but they only deliver every other week and quantities are unpredictable. I do think they'll ramp up, they've said we're getting another 10M Moderna by the end of June. But until they start shipping from the US factories it'll be unpredictable and likely heavily loaded towards the end of June.

10M doses of Moderna and about 20M doses of BioNTech-Pfizer by the end of next month. Plus, possibly some AZ and J&J. That should be 11M+ for Ontario, I think.

Doing 200K doses on weekdays and 100K on weekend would use up about 10M doses so this level should be achievable from the supply point of view. That would take us to about 2.5x the vaccination level of today, or about 90% (in practice some of those will be second doses already) by the end of June.

Should be noted: Pfizer was effective in preventing covid-19 in this age group 100% (2,200 in the US study). More great news on the horizon.

Hopefully we can see more millennials and boomers getting the vaccine. Seems that the most interested groups are the "Greatest Gens", "Silent Gens", "Gen X'ers" and "Zoomers".
