The proposed development of two 18-storey towers at 55 Kerr Street in Cambridge was approved by Cambridge City Council last night.

The proposed ION route runs just behind this property, and the closest station would be a ~5 minute walk. Makes perfect sense.

Well that design is a hot piece of garbage. which discount architect designed this? Nimbies won again a 2 year delay and 16 floors knocked off the originally purposed building.

The good thing is that there are so many different architectural styles included in this project that there should be something there for everyone to like!
Haha, that's grotesque looking. The original design was a lot different, though still a somewhat ugly post-modern mess. This new one is just wack. I'm going to guess that they redesigned the podium due to complaints because all the surrounding blocks are single family homes. A shame they scaled it back so much though but that's par-for-the course in Complainbridge.

The podium is unfortunate - this really could have felt much smaller and less oppressive... but now this is what the complainers get.

Yeah that podium design definitely looks like a "here, its the same as your houses so if you call it ugly, you're ugly too" approach.

It's a "just fuck me up bro" kind of architectural design. Should have thrown in some brutalism, art deco, constructivism, neomodern, functionalism, new objectivity etc in as well. Have a whole mélange of styles. Maybe one on each floor to really make sure it's as bad as possibly can be.

Approval is good. But it's still only "Proposed" until there are some shovels in the ground!

That podium is pretty bad. The brick part looks decent from the photo, and the glass part looks okay, but the transition half way up is terrible.
(And of course the tower has a weird transition half way up as well.) Why is this style so popular? If you have a good design, why not apply it to the whole building? What is the appeal of changing designs partway up? |
