Of the many start-ups that we hear about in town, I think Medella's product, contact lenses that use nano-technology to monitor blood glucose in diabetics, to be one of the neatest. I hope that they can succeed in bringing it to market.

A little bit similar to Aterica (a smart case for an Epipen), providing smartphone-based health monitoring capability.

Looks like a very interesting concept, but they'll surely need to raise a substantially larger amount yet to get the product to market. I hope they do succeed.

As some of you know, I'm a high school teacher. I've been using this product called Planboard by chalk.com for a while now and loving it. Then I find out this week that it's based in downtown Kitchener. Love that!

If you haven't seen it, even if you're not in education, take a look.

I really like the fact that we are attracting all kinds of startups -- food tech in this case -- not just software and electronics.  Willow Cup started in San Francisco but came back to Canada.  And chose Kitchener as the place to be.

To clarify, the founder did her undergraduate degree at McGill, a Master's degree at Guelph, and then was initially accepted into the University of Guelph's The Centre for Business and Student Enterprise (CBaSE) incubator.  After a few weeks there, they made the jump to a San Francisco accelerator. Then back to Kitchener for the UW-Communitech supported accelerator.

On a side note, is there a functional difference between an incubator and an accelerator?
