The COVID-19 pandemic
(11-14-2021, 11:02 PM)ac3r Wrote: Fauci urging those eligible to get booster shots as there is growing evidence of waning effacy of the vaccines: https://news.yahoo.com/dr-fauci-just-iss...46228.html

It's worth pointing out that Canada isn't yet seeing the same degree of waning efficacy that the US is. Our wider spacing between doses is possibly a factor in why, though it's muddied by Canada also giving mixed Pfizer/Moderna regimens.

I do think boosters will be necessary, as even Canada's wider spacing between doses was still much smaller than most two dose vaccines, and I will get mine when eligible. But for those that are worried about their risk as a fully vaccinated person, I think it's worth keeping in mind that one's individual risk here is not as high as US and Israeli headlines might suggest.

Israel and the US also have far more spread, due to lackluster vaccine uptake. Israel's early status as a leader has been erased, and they are now one of the least vaccinated amongst developed countries.

Hopefully the pill that Pfizer is working on is approved as well.

Quote:Generally, a vaccination program is justified if its anticipated benefits outweigh its potential risks. Children aged 5-11 years are unlikely to be deemed capable of consenting to vaccination, and decisions related to their vaccination will likely be made by parents or guardians. Given the short- term uncertainties surrounding pediatric vaccination at this time, children and their parents or guardians should be supported and respected in their decisions regarding COVID -19 vaccinations for the child, whatever decisions they make, and should not be stigmatised for accepting, or not accepting, the vaccination offer.

Read it how you want. But hopefully no one tries to force their opinion on parents decisions whether they vaccinate or not vaccinated their younglings.

Why not?

Why should my child be endangered by other parents unwillingness to accept science?

This is nothing new, children who are not vaccinated for many other dangerous diseases are not allowed in schools.

This is more bullshit pandering to the anti-vaxx crazies.

Am I suggesting that parents should be forced? No. Am I suggesting that there should be consequences for their bad choices. Absofreakinglutely.

Vaccines are in fact not mandatory to attend school, despite the popular myth: https://www.ontario.ca/page/vaccines-chi...#section-4

According to you, Dan. But not the government. But I'll re-quote what they said:

Do you really believe your vaccinated child is endangered? What is the science to back up that ridiculous claim? If your kid is vaccinated, their risk is pretty much zero...that's the science.

And this is not 'anti-vaxx crazies'. This it the Government of Canada response. They are saying that there is not enough evidence to suggest vaccinating your younglings or not.

Or do you simply not read the link?

My child cannot be vaccinated at this point.

But even if they could, you don't know what my child's medical history is, so it's a bit presumptuous to call it "ridiculous". There are many children who have serious illnesses who, even with vaccination, would be at a high risk. That's the science.

And I am aware of who made the statement, as I said, they are pandering to anti-vaxxers, not that they were anti-vaxxers.

They should have made a definitive statement about vaccination. And, while children (both those who are at increased risk, AND those who are at a nominal risk) are harmed by this disease, it is also the case that children are harmed by widespread prevalence of the disease, both directly, and through parents who get sick.

Even if children were 100% safe from this disease (they are not) it wouldn't even be the only vaccination we give children that protects others from diseases children can be spread, but not be harmed by.

Look, we want this pandemic to be over, right? Kids are spreading it a lot in Europe. The NACI document says they don't think it's justified to vaccinate solely for population benefits, but I think even based on individual benefits it's worth it, and definitely on a population level.
