They are being crushed by theft!!! You will see more of this with stores. Walmart in Brampton are closing too because of loss through theft.

The beer store no longer serves any purpose other than taking empties. They are recycling centres in prime real estate areas.

I can’t find any mention of Walmart closing Canadian stores since a press release in 2021 where they closed 6 across the country: https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/walmart...-1.5950315

Here’s a 2025 press release about how they’re opening more: https://www.walmartcanada.ca/news/2025/0...ent-in-its

You should reconsider where you get your local news…

They are closing stores because people can now buy beer at convenience stores and don't need to travel to a beer store. Nothing to do with theft.

And LCBO location downtown, too.

UFCW Canada Local 12R24 might not like it, but I propose this solution that would even allow us to implement a deposit system on regular bottles/cans to reduce the amount we put into our own landfills (or literally ship half-way around the planet to places like Philippines...because environmentally that makes so much sense to do):

It has everything to do with theft too, actually. Speak to any The Beer Store employee or manager at an urban store location like this and they'll tell you people sell a lot of stuff. It's extremely easy to walk in, grab a couple cans and dip out within 30 seconds and the dude getting paid minimum wage to stand around isn't going to risk their safety to stop that. I mean there are tons of news stories you can easily search up about rampant theft at TBS and LCBO. It isn't theft alone causing these stores to close, but it is certainly a contributing factor.

I know that theft is a major problem at LCBO stores, but I would think that there is not much profit in fencing cans of beer compared to high-end liquor.

LCBO stores often have security on site. Haven't seen that at the beer store.

There has always been a security guard posted at this location whenever I've gone (which admittedly has just been a few times). I haven't seen that at other stores so presumably theft was an issue at this location. Still a shame we're losing it though.

It's funny to me how some people just deny that theft was the issue and bring up random news articles - because we all know if it's not in the news (especially legacy mainstream news) it didn't happen

Theft was the first thing that came to my mind, sad but not unexpected - more will come

In reality it's the fact that losing their pseudo monopoly status makes the business unsustainable. The union representing the workers is expecting around 100 locations to close this year.
Theft will contribute to this, but also losing 60% of their business may also explain it.
Provincial estimates showed that the Beer Store’s percentage of Ontario’s alcohol market is expected to plunge to 15 per cent by 2026-27 from 41.1 per cent in 2024 as a result of expanded alcohol retailing.
