IN8 has put their redevelopment of Hamilton city centre on ice indefinitely, meaning the empty mall will just be sitting vacant. Does this signal a sign that  some of their new projects locally may be delayed as well.

The question I'd have about every project in town that hasn't yet put shovels in ground.

If this gets cancelled, I hope it's before they demolish one of the nicer looking downtown blocks...

Considering that IN8 has applied for more than just demolition permits here I doubt they'll pull out of this project, the Hamilton project maybe, especially because of how large it is compared to all the other projects they've done. However like most projects across the country nothing is selling so it doesn't make sense from a developers perspective to market a building heavily just for it to sit not selling for months on end.

Yeah I imagine they have too much invested at this point. Just to get this far costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. Would be a waste to just cancel it all after they've had the building designed, engineered, paid for all the heritage consultants, applications, wages and so on.

I think it will be like many other projects right now, unofficially on hold until the macro economic situation of the world changes.

So the 2 towers on Borden are the last towers that need to be approved?  Hopefully We will hear about new developments or it's going to be a boring 2024.

Walking on Canada Day to watch the fireworks, I noticed a box like a hydro transformer at the back on Charles with IN8 safety cones around it. Hmm, wonder what they are up to? Also the other site they own across the old transit terminal has been empty and for lease sign up for quite awhile now.

They just had a fire here. Didn't stop by until it was out so I don't know how bad it was, but 5+ engines showed up. It looks okay from the outside, but I wonder if this will just end up being demolished from the damage now.

The idea was to preserve the facades facing Queen, and nothing beyond that, I believe. So long as those can be stabilized I don't see an issue.

The only portion that they are planning to retain is the Pearl Laundry Facade the rest of it will be demolished. The brick from further down Queen (98-108) is expected to be reclaimed and used to reclad that portion of the future podium (along with new matching brick).

It appeared that the damage was not major, I think only two firefighters entered the building. Possibly a homeless person started a fire inside (in the unit closest to Charles St)?

Yes, but I'd prefer to see demolition happen when they are ready to do construction rather than end up with an empty block for 5 years. Even if they are vacant, I think it's still nicer than a dirt pit.

I'm still just annoyed that nice sites like this get redeveloped first when there is so much trash (like the plaza right across Queen St - yeah I know it's probably not a big enough property) around left alone.

Alas, this is bound to happen from time to time when it's the developers making decisions on priorities.

What started it, homeless squatters? That used to be a massive problem in the 90s.
