ION - Waterloo Region's Light Rail Transit
Anyone speculation on circumstances?

The driver was most likely not paying attention or tried to beat the train to make her turn. Luckily the damage does not seem severe to the train nor to the vehicle involved, so I'd gather the injuries aren't bad.

There was always going to be a first time...

"It's not yet clear what caused the crash."

I'm going to go with "dumbass driver crossing the path of the train" given the car was t-boned.

The big 'NO TURN, TRAIN' lights would have ben on as well. Definitely van-driver error.

The Record article says the train driver was not at fault, so that supports that the van driver turned right through a lit no right turn sign.

I was parked a block away and had the train pass me. Then it was sirens and emergency vehicles everywhere! I turned the emt scanner on and they had called for 4 ambulances, there were at least two emt supervisors on scene already

Who had May 31st in the pool? Much earlier than I had thought.....

CTV article has been updated. Apparently the van ran a red light.

From CTV's updated article...

"According to police, the van was driving north on Water Street when it failed to stop for a red light. It struck an LRT vehicle on Duke, which had the right of way."

Well blowing through a red light.. could have been far worse ...

My friend has a scanner and texted me at 12:50 about it, I managed to catch 514 at the R&T Park station returning to the OMSF at reduced speed::

The missing coupler cover is the only obvious damage, hopefully all of the non-obvious damage is minor.

Edit to add: Unlisted video shared exclusively here, don't re-post to other forums or social media sites.

Quote from CTV: "The LRT vehicle had about $40,000 in damage done to it"

There must be some internal damage

Could a coupler cost that much?

Out of curiosity, who pays for that? The van driver's insurance, I'd assume, because damn, I feel like a $40,000 payout is gonna raise their insurance cost by a pretty penny
