Cycling in Waterloo Region

Scott Foil 10 frameset, Shimano 105 groupset, on Formula Racing 3 wheels; certainly the only bike configured with that set of kit. In the off chance you happen to see it around town, would be much obliged for a tip.

I had a bike stolen from a shed a few years ago in broad daylight with the 2 thieves caught on my security cam. I provided the serial number and the video to the WPS and a couple of days later was able to get the actual names of the scumbags from somebody who knew them which I also called in to the police. I never heard back from the cops. The WPS is useless.

They will not spend much effort on bike thefts, indeed. Don't count on them to get any bike back.

Yes, it pisses me off. As a low income person, my bicycle is my major transportation method, so having it stolen has a big effect on my finances. I had just spent over a $100 on a new rack and panniers for it when it got stolen.

That is really unfortunate, I don't think the police consider much the impact thefts have on people.

FWIW I've been fortunate enough to get two stolen bike returned, both, returned as a result of our local bike shop proprietor spotting them on the street, and neither due to the investigative work of WRPS.

Sad

Any advice based on that? Locks, better locks, or even locking won't help?

None of my bikes that were stolen were locked up...so...locking bikes is helpful, even when in a secure location. Unfortunately it is difficult to lock a bike in a parking garage as there is nothing to lock to.

My bike was stolen from my shed a couple years ago (around this time of year... spring seems to be prime time for shed thefts). They cut through the hasp to get into the shed. I thought I was being smart by locking my replacement bike to my snowblower using a cable lock, but then a couple weeks later the thieves came back, cut the hasp again and then cut the cable lock. Now my bike lives inside.

Now here's a great idea to get people out on their bikes! Why can't Waterloo Region ever have fun? https://www.facebook.com/100994991766261...5927458263

Alas, cable locks are not super secure. And it seems that your bike was nice enough for the thieves to come back for! Sad

I'm sure there are many factors, such as this one, that go into few stolen goods being returned. I suspect the biggest is probably that if the police put their entire resources into recovering stolen goods we'd probably still only see something like 10% of items returned. It's just a difficult task... I wonder how much it would cost to track down and return all stolen goods vs just paying to replace them. That would be forgoing justice, but I also think most police see sending petty theft to the courts as a further waste of money, because there is no "justice" to be had there anyways.

FWIW, my neighbour's apartment was burgled, and had some amount of their things tracked down and returned.

On the topic of bikes: I've never had one stolen because I have the golden strategy of never leaving it outside (locked or otherwise). It is a frustratingly limiting strategy though...

I live in a ground floor apartment now and keep my bikes inside. In some situations it is hard to bring bikes inside. I lived in Stanley Park in an upper level townhouse and stored my recumbent bike under the stairs outside, locked with a too flimsy cable lock. It got stolen after I had owned it for 14 years.

It is really eye opening how far away our perceptions of justice are from reality. Most people think the police spend time investigating and tracking down criminals. They just don't. I think that disconnect is partially responsible for the visceral response to calls to defund the police.

Of course, property theft is a big issue in our community. But if our community is like the average North American one, wage theft is at least an order of magnitude larger even by conservative estimates. And that REALLY open's one's eyes.

But like most things, police tracking down criminals after property is stolen is not the most effective strategies for crime prevention...the list of ways which even the police could proactively reduce bike theft is very long, and police based solutions aren't even close to the whole list.

Are there some (Canadian) studies on wage theft? Labour legislation is so different in the US that it's really not applicable.

Is the scale potentially different?

Yes.

Are the power forces at play different? No.

Frankly, it's even the same companies much of the time.

I have no doubt whatsoever that the same problems exist.

But this is a tangent, so maybe it needs a new thread.
