Duke Tower Kitchener | 39 fl | completed

SRM is doing the 44 floor skyscraper on Francis. While it still looks very boring and uninspired, it at least looks a bit better than this thing. Then again, we all thought this was possibly going to look good until they completely changed the design and went with the cheapest facade materials possible.

From Andrew Rutland on Twitter, the podium appears to be nearing completion. Verdict: not great! And definitely not seeing much prep for the night time lighting accents that were noted in some earlier chatter about the project.

And as a reminder of the initial concept proposed for the podium (though I know marketing renders are never an image of reality):

What's more horrible... this or Charlie West.

This, by a considerable margin, istm.

By the way, could somebody post a pic of what the Charlie West garage facade looks like at night?

Defiintely this. Charlie West is bland, but the materials are good and the design is pretty standard, so there's an aesthetic coherence. This is just bad in every regard.

I don't have a picture of the Charlie West garage but it's not that bad at night. If there is supposed to be a design in that metal façade then it's impossible to see. Everyone says it's supposed to be a satellite view of downtown Kitchener but I can't seem to make anything out that corresponds to streets or city blocks. It just looks like random holes in the metal that lets light in/out.

This and it's not close, IMO

It’s a black-and-white aerial photograph. Once you get oriented as to which direction everything is going you may find it easier to see, but it’s sufficiently low resolution that getting oriented isn’t that easy. Unfortunately the effect doesn’t come off the way I think it was intended; in particular, one can see where the lights are behind rather than the entire appearance coming from the pattern of holes.

Unfortunately the best photo I can find right now is this daytime shot:

I believe the railway line runs diagonally from about 2/3 up the left side to near the top right. I thought somebody posted a good nighttime shot here somewhere that would be easier to see.

But yeah, overall the effect doesn’t come off the way I think they hoped.

Even if Charlie West didn't turn out super well at least they seemed to make some attempt to deliver on the original vision, if not perfect. And maybe could be improved later.

This one is going to be a monolith forever and is just a lazy effort like so many other pre-fab podium copy-paste looks around the region.

Both podiums are egregious but this one is more offensive. It would have looked better in solid black or white.

Had not been by to see around the side recently. Via Twitter - seems like they decided 2 facades needed this pre-cast bonanza...

Ugh. It's not even the tower - although that looks bad - it's the podium that just makes you go WTF?
